Throwing Out the Dead Flowers

I just now finally threw out the floral arrangements left over from John’s Celebration of Life here at the house…. I hadn’t moved them in the past 2.5 months; they just sat where they’d been placed and slowly dried up into dead, lifeless stalks.

Occasionally, in the intervening weeks, a leaf had fallen to the floor and was placed softly in the trash.  Once when I bumped up against a vase of what had been a stunning bouquet of lilies from his ex-wife, a cascade of old petals had rustled their way down, scattering on the floor below while my husband’s high school photo continued to smile at me.  I left those lily petals on the floor for at least a week before sweeping them away.  It seemed wrong somehow, as though I was sweeping him away.

I’m not really sure why I got rid of the dead things today.  It’s not that I had any sense of it being the “right” time… on the contrary, I worked myself into a minor fit of irritation, which was probably some kind of false courage.  And apologized to my husband for what seemed like moving one step further away from him.

Grief is such a strange, horrible sensation. John was never in those flowers, dead or alive. They arrived two weeks after he died. He didn’t have a say in them, he didn’t pick them out for me, and he never saw them. Yet, they somehow felt like a connection.

But then, everything is.

He said I was the first girl he had ever loved, and I would be the last.

That was a promise he kept.

John and I owned both a small antiques shop and a used bookstore in Lewiston, Maine. After John died, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with the two shops – they take up a huge amount of time, and weren’t yet covering their own costs.  After John died in October of 2016, the shops were barely open during the critical holiday sales season; I couldn’t stand being in them because we had such dreams for the future.

But Johnny loved his little bookstore (Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera) and the goal was that he would one day “retire” into running the two shops.  So I’ve committed to keeping them open, although Heritage Collectibles is now Heritage Collectibles, Books & Maps as I’ve combined those two businesses, and I’m opening Papa’s Thrift Shop for the inventory that doesn’t really work in the main store.  (Papa is what John’s grandchildren called him.)

CDC: Suicide Is the 10th Leading Cause of Death in the US

 

This is a nightmare.  According to the CDC, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 43,000 people as of the last data available.

  1. Heart disease: 614,348
  2. Cancer: 591,699
  3.  Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 147,101
  4.  Accidents (unintentional injuries): 136,053
  5.  Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 133,103
  6.  Alzheimer’s disease: 93,541
  7.  Diabetes: 76,48 (the CDC site has a typo)
  8.  Influenza and pneumonia: 55,227
  9.  Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 48,146
  10.  Intentional self-harm (suicide): 42,773

If You Are Thinking About Suicide, Read This First.

If you are feeling suicidal now, please stop long enough to read this. It will only take about five minutes. I do not want to talk you out of your bad feelings. I am not a therapist or other mental health professional – only someone who knows what it is like to be in pain.

I don’t know who you are, or why you are reading this page. I only know that for the moment, you’re reading it, and that is good. I can assume that you are here because you are troubled and considering ending your life. If it were possible, I would prefer to be there with you at this moment, to sit with you and talk, face to face and heart to heart. But since that is not possible, we will have to make do with this.

I have known a lot of people who have wanted to kill themselves, so I have some small idea of what you might be feeling. I know that you might not be up to reading a long book, so I am going to keep this short. While we are together here for the next five minutes, I have five simple, practical things I would like to share with you. I won’t argue with you about whether you should kill yourself. But I assume that if you are thinking about it, you feel pretty bad.

Well, you’re still reading, and that’s very good. I’d like to ask you to stay with me for the rest of this page. I hope it means that you’re at least a tiny bit unsure, somewhere deep inside, about whether or not you really will end your life. Often people feel that, even in the deepest darkness of despair. Being unsure about dying is okay and normal. The fact that you are still alive at this minute means you are still a little bit unsure. It means that even while you want to die, at the same time some part of you still wants to live. So let’s hang on to that, and keep going for a few more minutes.

Start by considering this statement:

Suicide is not chosen; it happens
when pain exceeds
resources for coping with pain.

That’s all it’s about. You are not a bad person, or crazy, or weak, or flawed, because you feel suicidal. It doesn’t even mean that you really want to die – it only means that you have more pain than you can cope with right now. If I start piling weights on your shoulders, you will eventually collapse if I add enough weights… no matter how much you want to remain standing. Willpower has nothing to do with it. Of course you would cheer yourself up, if you could.

Don’t accept it if someone tells you, “That’s not enough to be suicidal about.” There are many kinds of pain that may lead to suicide. Whether or not the pain is bearable may differ from person to person. What might be bearable to someone else, may not be bearable to you. The point at which the pain becomes unbearable depends on what kinds of coping resources you have. Individuals vary greatly in their capacity to withstand pain.

When pain exceeds pain-coping resources, suicidal feelings are the result. Suicide is neither wrong nor right; it is not a defect of character; it is morally neutral. It is simply an imbalance of pain versus coping resources.

You can survive suicidal feelings if you do either of two things: (1) find a way to reduce your pain, or (2) find a way to increase your coping resources. Both are possible.

Now I want to share with you five things to think about…

1 You need to hear that people do get through this — even people who feel as badly as you are feeling now. Statistically, there is a very good chance that you are going to live. I hope that this information gives you some sense of hope.
2 Give yourself some distance. Say to yourself, “I will wait 24 hours before I do anything.” Or a week. Remember that feelings and actions are two different things – just because you feel like killing yourself, doesn’t mean that you have to actually do it right this minute. Put some distance between your suicidal feelings and suicidal action. Even if it’s just 24 hours. You have already done it for 5 minutes, just by reading this page. You can do it for another 5 minutes by continuing to read this page. Keep going, and realize that while you still feel suicidal, you are not, at this moment, acting on it. That is very encouraging to me, and I hope it is to you.
3 People often turn to suicide because they are seeking relief from pain. Remember that relief is a feeling. And you have to be alive to feel it. You will not feel the relief you so desperately seek, if you are dead.
4 Some people will react badly to your suicidal feelings, either because they are frightened, or angry; they may actually increase your pain instead of helping you, despite their intentions, by saying or doing thoughtless things. You have to understand that their bad reactions are about their fears, not about you.

But there are people out there who can be with you in this horrible time, and will not judge you, or argue with you, or send you to a hospital, or try to talk you out of how badly you feel. They will simply care for you. Find one of them. Now. Use your 24 hours, or your week, and tell someone what’s going on with you. It is okay to ask for help. Try:

  • Send an anonymous e-mail to The Samaritans
  • Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (TTY:1-800-799-4TTY)
  • (In Australia, call Lifeline Australia at telephone: 13 11 14
  • Teenagers, call Covenant House NineLine, 1-800-999-9999
  • Look in the front of your phone book for a crisis line
  • Call a psychotherapist
  • Carefully choose a friend or a minister or rabbi, someone who is likely to listen

But don’t give yourself the additional burden of trying to deal with this alone. Just talking about how you got to where you are, releases an awful lot of the pressure, and it might be just the additional coping resource you need to regain your balance.

5 Suicidal feelings are, in and of themselves, traumatic. After they subside, you need to continue caring for yourself. Therapy is a really good idea. So are the various self-help groups available both in your community and on the Internet.

 

Well, it’s been a few minutes and you’re still with me. I’m really glad.

Since you have made it this far, you deserve a reward. I think you should reward yourself by giving yourself a gift. The gift you will give yourself is a coping resource. Remember, back up near the top of the page, I said that the idea is to make sure you have more coping resources than you have pain. So let’s give you another coping resource, or two, or ten…! until they outnumber your sources of pain.

Now, while this page may have given you some small relief, the best coping resource we can give you is another human being to talk with. If you find someone who wants to listen, and tell them how you are feeling and how you got to this point, you will have increased your coping resources by one. Hopefully the first person you choose won’t be the last. There are a lot of people out there who really want to hear from you. It’s time to start looking around for one of them.

Now: I’d like you to call someone.

Additional things to read:

  • How serious is our condition? …”He only took 15 pills, he wasn’t really serious…” if others are making you feel like you’re just trying to get attention… read this.
  • Why is it so hard for us to recover from being suicidal? …while most suicidal people recover and go on, others struggle with suicidal thoughts and feelings for months or even years. Suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Recovery from grief and loss …has anyone significant in your life recently died? You would be in good company… many suicidal people have recently suffered a loss.
  • The stigma of suicide that prevents suicidal people from recovering: we are not only fighting our own pain, but the pain that others inflict on us… and that we ourselves add to. Stigma is a huge complicating factor in suicidal feelings.
  • Resources about depression …if you are suicidal, you are most likely experiencing some form of depression. This is good news, because depression can be treated, helping you feel better.
  • A 4 minute depression quiz …maybe you have depression and want to find out right now, scientifically, at no cost.
  • Depression symptoms …the specific symptoms of a full blown episode of clinical depression
  • Bipolar symptoms …the specific symptoms of a full blown episode of bipolar disorder, which includes mania (highs) and the lows of depression

Do you know someone who is suicidal… or would you like to be able to help, if the situation arises? Learn what to do, so that you can make the situation better, not worse.

Other online sources of help:

  • The Samaritans – trained volunteers are available 24 hours a day to listen and provide emotional support. You can call a volunteer on the phone, or e-mail them. Confidential and non-judgmental. Short of writing to a psychotherapist, the best source of online help.
  • Talk to a therapist online – Read this page to find out how.
  • Depression support group online: Psych Central Depression Support Group – Please note: this is a very big group, but amidst all the chatter, it is possible to find someone who will hear you and offer support.
  • Psych Central has a good listing of online resources for suicide – and other mental health needs.
  • Still feel bad? These jokes might relieve the pressure for a minute or two.
  • If you want help finding a human being to talk with in person, who can help you live through this, try reading this article about how to Choose a Competent Counselor.

Sometimes people need additional private help before they are ready to talk with someone in person. Here are a few books you could read on your own in private. I know from personal experience that each one has helped someone like you.

  • Suicide: The Forever Decision by Paul G. Quinnett, PhD (Continuum, ISBN 0-8264-0391-3). Frank and helpful conversation with a therapist who cares.
  • Choosing to Live: how to defeat suicide through cognitive therapy by Thomas E. Ellis PsyD and Cory F. Newman PhD (New Harbinger Publications, ISBN 1-57224-056-3). Another conversational book with practical help for suicidal persons.
  • How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me: One Person’s Guide to Suicide Prevention by Susan Rose Blauner (William Morrow, ISBN 0066211212). A very practical survival guide by an actual survivor.
  • Out of the Nightmare: Recovery From Depression And Suicidal Pain, by David L. Conroy, PhD (Authors Choice Press, ISBN 0595414974). As if suicidal persons weren’t feeling bad enough already, our thoughtless attitudes can cause them to feel guilt and shame, and keep them from getting help in time. Dr. Conroy blasts apart the myths of suicide, and looks at suicidal feelings from the inside, in a down to earth, non-judgmental way. This is a book that will save lives by washing away the stigma of suicide and opening the door to a real way out of the nightmare.

Coming Out of My Bedroom

After John first died, and after all the flow of visitors stopped dropping in, and after my daughter went back home to California (nearly a month later), I pretty much holed up in what was our bedroom.

My big house (9 rooms, 2.5 baths on 3 floors) was so empty.

John wasn’t home.  He wasn’t going to come home.

Since it was November in Maine at that point, I turned the heat down as low as I dared on both the first floor and in the man cave.  It didn’t matter how cold they were because I was living in our/my bedroom anyway.

The man cave in particular has been closed off.  It is a finished daylight basement that seemed like it had been built with John in mind:  there was plenty of room for his desk & file cabinet, a sitting area of leather furniture in front of an entertainment center with a big old TV that was usually turned on to an oldies channel, space for the band to practice (and built in bookcases for his music) although he’d given up playing when his hands betrayed him, more bookcases for his extensive library, a dry bar that was a catchall for paperwork and junk, and even a built in desk area that he used for building his model airplanes.

Not only was the inside space perfect for my husband, but it led directly onto our 1200 square foot, two-level back deck overhanging a gully.  The house is built into a hill, so even though it wasn’t the Hill Gully farm John had owned and loved for decades before leaving it for me, he still had a hill gully of sorts.  Johnny spent hours on that deck, staring into the woods.  Pondering… well, apparently pondering blacker, far more painful thoughts than I had realized.

I have a hard time being in the man cave.  But I have to go down there several times a week because our wireless printer and our photocopier/fax machine are set up in Johnny’s space.

It hurts every single time.  It hurts because his man cave is cleaned up and not messy the way John usually left it.  The television isn’t on for background noise.  The windows and French doors are covered to minimize heat loss.

It feels sterile.  It doesn’t feel like my husband.  He was a tall man; he was larger than life. Although most of his stuff is still there, it feels empty.  John is not there, and it’s just another big room, in a big house, that I prefer to avoid.

…………

I no longer stay in just our bedroom…  I’ve started using my second floor office, on the other side of the hallway landing from the bedroom I’ve lived in since October 21st.

I open the door to my office, and turn on all the lights, and sit at my desk, trying to pay bills and organize the pictures and papers that will go into the timeline of John’s life.  I can’t bear to throw away a scrap of paper that has his handwriting on it. I cry – sometimes with great gulping sobs – over odd notes and memories.

But I’m out of our/my bedroom for a while.

The More You Hang Out With Mom, The Longer She’ll Live…

Not quite a decade and a half ago, when my daughter was still a teenager, I promised her I’d live to be 97 years old.

I no longer remember what prompted the conversation, but that age – 97 – has stuck with me ever since.  It’s not all so far-fetched, as I come from a mostly long-lived family (at least, on my father’s side), and I’m a vegetarian and reasonably healthy.

Lately, however… ever since my husband died (he was not my daughter’s father), I’ve been having trouble with my promise.

I don’t want to live another 37 years without him.  But I don’t want my daughter to live without me, either… at least, not any longer than she has to.

I am suddenly very lonely, a feeling I’ve never had before.  Daughter does her best, but she lives 3000 miles away.  Thank goodness she and her husband plan to move back to Maine later this spring so they can start having babies… she was never going to have children without me around to be a Mummu to those babies.  (Mummu is a Finnish word for Grammie.)

John’s kids are all reasonably close to me – between 20 minutes and 2 hours away – but they were adults with their own lives when Johnny and I married.  It’s not the same.

We need the kids who have known us for as long as they can remember.  

The following brief article has no major insights, but it captures that need to be around our children.

 

Study Shows the More You Hang Out With Your Mom, the Longer She’ll Live

Inviting Grandma over for dinner may actually extend her life — and increase its quality — a new study shows.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco found that loneliness plays a large role in the decline so often associated with old age. The study followed 1,600 adults, with an average age of 71 — despite controlling for socioeconomic status and health, the lonely consistently held higher mortality rates. Nearly 23% of lonely participants died within six years of the study, as opposed to only 14% of those that reported adequate companionship.

“The need we’ve had our entire lives — people who know us, value us, who bring us joy — that never goes away,” Barbara Moscowitz, senior geriatric social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital, explained to The New York Times.The elderly place great value in those relationships, so much so that they often overlook a great deal more than their children or even their grandchildren do. It comes down to important relational skills, Rosemary Blieszner, a professor of human development at Virginia Tech, told The New York Times — skills that our grandparents have had a lifetime to hone.

“They’re pretty tolerant of friends’ imperfections and idiosyncrasies, more than young adults,” she said. “You bring a lot more experience to your friendships when you’re older. You know what’s worth fighting about and not worth fighting about.”

Beyond inviting our older relatives and friends into our homes, it’s important to encourage elderly relationships — which is why, despite popular belief, older folks tend to thrive in independent or assisted living environments. These living arrangements provide more ways to mingle, to connect, to thrive.

Spending quality time with Grandma and Grandpa helps them, but it benefits us, as well — the symbiotic relationship is undeniable. They get the companionship and conversation so crucial to every day life, and we get their stories, their hugs and, best of all, those famous, secret recipe cookies.

Warrior Project – Suicide Survivors Grief Group, 01/03/2017

Suicide Survivors Grief Group

We welcome those who have recently lost someone to suicide, or those who are still feeling the impact even years later. It is a place to share your grief and learn how to live again by learning from others who have been through a similar experience.

The goal is to share experiences and ways of managing the devastating grief you’re living with in a safe, upbeat environment unlike what most people think of when they hear the words “support group”.

The Suicide Survivors Grief Group meets most Tuesdays from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm at The Warrior Project, 189 B Main Street, Lewiston ME 04240. (See directions below.)

Our groups are free & confidential, run by a loss survivor/social worker, and are non-religious in nature.

To Find Us: From Main Street in Lewiston, turn onto Park Street and park in the first parking space on the street that’s available. The meters are free after 5:00 pm and on weekends.

You’ll see Heritage Books & Maps at the very beginning – 5 Park Street. (The light should be on inside to help you see it, although the shop will not be open).

Facing Heritage Books & Maps, you’ll see an alley to its left. A silver Jeep will probably be parked in that alley, near our entrance door on that side of the building.
Please enter through that back door off the alley. (You may hear a dog barking inside; she won’t bother you, but she is loud until she settles down.) There will be a sign posted on the door.

This group, as well as our Saturday evening group for those living with chronic psychic/emotional and/or physical pain combined with hopelessness, is confidential and run by a loss survivor/social worker.

The Gray Area of Being Suicidal

The following blog from The Mighty (https://themighty.com) describes the passive, habitual, long-term suicidality that too many people live with.  The thoughts are always there, lurking in the background.  If something negative happens, no matter how minor it is, the immediate thought is “I could kill myself and get this over with”.  Tragically, the suicidal thoughts can be there even everything is going well.

This has to be a very scary place for anyone to live, and as time goes on, the more familiar you are with those constant thoughts of suicide, the more likely you may be to act on them.

Please, if you have suicidal thoughts, I beg of you to get help in dealing with them.  Yes, it will terrify those you love, but if you attempt to kill yourself… or far worse, if you succeed… your actions will more than terrify your loved ones.  It will devastate them forever in ways you cannot imagine.

When You’re in the Gray Area of Being Suicidal

To Whom It May Concern:

I’m suicidal. And no, it’s not what you think. I am safe. I am not harming myself. I do not have a plan, and I do not plan on doing anything. But I’m suicidal. And I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t.

People think of things like suicide in such black or white terms. But much like everything else we are so quick to place into categories, being suicidal falls into a gray area for me. Sometimes, I wonder if it does for anybody else. See I can be in a really great mood, right? I could be having the best day of my life. Still, suicidal thoughts will linger. I don’t have to be in a bad mood to be suicidal. I will still have those thoughts if I’m surrounded by the people I love, or if I’m doing something I’m passionate about.

I wake up most mornings thinking I’d be better off dead. But I’m quickly distracted by my husband and son, who are sound asleep next to me. I still feel it, but I try not to give power to it. Throughout the day I am faced with challenges that directly affect my subconscious. Either the suicidal thoughts get louder, or they remain just a feeling.

I should explain better; sometimes being suicidal is different than suicidal thoughts. It’s an actual feeling. The feeling that you have an itch you can’t scratch, that a dark cloud is shrouding you. It’s anxiety and depression, it’s mixed state. You’re drowning, there’s no air, and coming down from that feeling takes so long you think it’s impossible. You have blinders on and you don’t know what’s going to happen next. You just have to push through. And while this feeling is happening, you go through your day, as normal as you can, without feeding the feeling.

Some days are harder than others, and today happens to be one of those days. I know I’m not feeling good, and I’ve taken that into account. But I woke up thinking my family is better off without me. Then I started thinking about finances and my heart sunk a little more. I started thinking about my parents and my depression got worse. And I started thinking about everything my husband does so I can test a career in writing, and God, he can do better than me. It’s not fair to him. If I can’t impress the people surrounding me now, can I face how my son will inevitably feel about me? And I just start crying, because it’s all too much, and I’m just a joke. I feel like I’m drowning, over and over and over again. It would be so much easier to end things, and my family could finally get away from how terrible I am.

The way I feel isn’t a reflection of reality though. I know I have things to live for, I know things will get better. I know my family loves me, and the people who don’t like me don’t matter. In fact, they probably don’t give a shit. I know this feeling will pass. I just wish my mind and my body would work towards getting better.

I’m not bad yet. I haven’t made any attempts in almost two years, and I’m really proud of that. Every attempt I’ve made to take my own life ends the same way; I fade into a sleep, and I do regret my actions. I think I used to romanticize my own death back when I had nothing to lose. Now everything is on the line, and I’m terrified of the day my thoughts will become louder than my voice. But I know realistically it may not always be this way, and I may need to admit myself to the hospital again someday.

I have great plans for my future and for my family. So please don’t worry. I don’t intend to end my life and I’m not self-harming. And if I was, I’d go to the hospital. I wanted to write this so people better understood feeling suicidal. It’s so much more than just one day someone decided to end it. It goes deeper than that. It’s years of torment, even on good days. It mostly doesn’t happen randomly — it’s a build up. I don’t want to die; my subconscious and my illness may disagree, but today my voice is louder, and I will not succumb to the evils of my mind.

People with mental illness live in dark places and gray areas. It’s not something that shuts off and on — it comes in waves, it peaks and it fades. But these feelings are never gone. And I wish more than anything in this world they would disappear. I am a warrior of my own mind, and I will continue defending my inner peace. Every day may be hard; but it makes me stronger every day.
